We believe that the health and well-being of the people within New Zealand’s media are central to the good of what gets produced and consumed. In the fast-paced and changing nature of the modern media environment, achieving balance and a sense of well-being can be difficult. For this reason, we seek to provide confidential support and encouragement to all media personnel at no cost.

MCNZ was established and is run by people with a connection to, and a love for, the media landscape. Our chaplains are trained in chaplaincy and have experience working in the media. We’re people who understand the pressures of the industry and have a desire to see those within it thrive.

Our vision is a healthy and vibrant media industry across all platforms in Aotearoa.

We’d love to support your organisation

We welcome the opportunity to build formal or informal partnerships with media organisations. These partnerships are collaborative, flexible, and focused on the well-being of your people.

Frequently
asked questions

  • Chaplaincy is for anyone work in New Zealand’s media industry. We know it can sometimes be hard to have those honest and meaningful conversations - which is why our chaplains provide space and a listening ear for you to process life and work, with your wellbeing front of mind. See it as a confidential sanctuary in a fast paced and hectic world.

  • A: We are aware that some people, understandably, feel cautious about this. The history of chaplaincy is based on a Christian model of care. Traditionally, in other settings such as hospitals and the defence forces, chaplains conduct religious ceremonies AND provide pastoral care. In the media context, the former is not required, so our sole focus is pastoral care. Our chaplains come from a Christian faith background, which informs their sense of your inherent dignity and value, and why we reckon you’re worthy of being listened to! Promoting any specific faith or belief is not our aim or purpose. We do not work to change anyone’s belief system; we exist simply to offer support - whether that’s practical, personal, or (if you raise it yourself) spiritual. It’s about meeting you where you're at and walking alongside you, whatever that looks like. The faith of our carefully selected chaplains does mean that they are comfortable discussing any spirituality with those who may wish to have that conversation.

  • A: Chaplains operate with a strict code of confidentiality. Confidentiality is key to what we do. Staff can speak freely, knowing nothing will be shared without their explicit permission, unless there’s a serious risk of harm. We have a confidentiality policy, which can be found here.

  • You can expect to be listened to and heard. That may sound simple, but how often do you feel like you’re really being listened to on the issues of life that you truly want to talk about, and how often do you feel like the other person actually gets it?

Chaplaincy is not counseling, but we believe there’s something significant that happens when we’re really heard by another human being.

With that in mind you can expect some questions to give you space to talk and you can expect the chaplain to listen, to prompt and to explore the journey you’re on.

It’s our hope that you’ll walk away feeling like you’re not alone and that you may have even found some equilibrium.

  • Contact us right here, or if you feel more comfortable, DM us on any of our social platforms.

  • We have full confidence that each of our chaplains can appropriately deal with a wide range of diverse people and circumstances. That said, our group of chaplains recognise that for some there may be sensitivities around gender and culture. In such instances, you may feel like someone other than our team above may be a better fit for you. If this is the case, please still get in touch with us. We are connected to a broad range of pastoral people and are confident that we can find someone you can talk to who is appropriate for your situation.

  • Yes, we’d love to have a conversation about what chaplaincy could look like in your context. You can find out more here.
